For the last few years, if you wanted to create fully interactive or animated websites then Flash was the only real option available to you (or your developers). Whilst Flash is an incredible tool for creating beautiful, interactive web elements, it hasn’t always been supported by browsers (something iPhone owners will be more than familiar with) and it’s always been a no-no as far as SEO (search engine optimisation) is concerned.

These days however we’ve got the exciting option of utilising HTML5, a mark-up language that has pushed the boundaries of web design, interactivity and browser compatibility. But just how far has HTML5 come since its official launch in 2010? Is HTML5 really more compatible than Adobe’s Flash? Has the mass market begun to embrace it?

Luckily we can answer some of these questions with the HTML5 infographic – I’ve Seen The Future, It’s In My Browser:

Here at Pixel Design Studio we’re more than familiar with HTML5, so if you’d like to commission a highly interactive website, get in touch with us via the contact form.

We love fonts here at Pixel Design Studios. They can, along with several other elements, make or break a design, be it online or in print. There are a huge variety, many based on historical lettering and scripts, and at least one for every occasion!

Whilst this used to be the preserve of specialist font enthusiasts and typesetters, the Internet opened it up to everyone. Since the first digital font, DigiGrotesk, was designed in 1968 by Hell Design Studio, people have been experimenting with digital versions of traditional typefaces. With the increasing availability and use of computers, fonts were used more and more, but the mass commercialisation of the Internet in the early 1980s really brought them to the forefront. With format standardisations, web font standards and other directives aimed at making fonts standardised across all machines, an explosion in the amount of foundries and designers began. Since then lots of programs have been designed to help you make your own fonts, and people certainly have been! Here are some of the best programs around today to help you create your own unique font:

YourFonts.com
Ever thought your handwriting would make a great font? Well, wonder no more. Yourfonts.com allows you to upload a high quality picture of the characters, then splits it up and allows you to download it in OpenType format, all for free!

Fontstruct.com
This is a nice, simple, pixel based font creator, and a great place to start. The easy to use interface gives you a set of shapes for each pixel, and you can create from there. It’s really very easy to sketch and erase, so give it a go! Another nice touch with this software is that it’s fully online, so you can use it anywhere and it’s owned by one of the largest font shops, Fontshop.com. So whilst it’s free to create, you can put it on sale and potentially make some money.

Fontlab.com Fontographer
At the higher end of the scale we have Fontographer and Font Lab studio. These are paid versions costing from $150 up to over $1000, but obviously come with a lot more functions. Whereas Fontstruct is pixel based, Fontlab works on vector information, allowing you a much greater flexibility and control over the shape of each character. As well as this you can choose what kind of format you want to export the final product in, import and edit existing fonts, and tweak all kinds of variables (kerning, glyphs etc). This is a professional product with all of the features that a pro would demand, and it’s reflected in the price.

Web design is a discipline that boasts a huge amount of diversity; when it comes to creating a website there are numerous different mark-up languages, development languages, content management systems, image types, analytics packages and a whole host of other elements available to a designer. As a result, the internet is made-up of a wide variety of websites, from the modern to the old-school.

So what are the most common mark-up languages? How many websites use Flash? Which analytics package is most popular?

Mobile web design is a novel concept that is maturing. This is because of the immense development in the technology front. Users of mobile phones are also increasing worldwide. This is not just redirecting an html page in a dissimilar markup words. There are abundant challenges that are linked with this novel concept.

It is projected that around trillion web pages and above were downloaded in the year 2008 alone. This is truly a huge download volume. There are numerous kinds of applications that are accessed by people day after day and the same has transformed swiftly from the earlier game scores and downloads of simple ring tones for mobiles. Social networking sites too are available on mobile phones these days and this has resulted in information being obtained and up linked on the move. The model of usage has experienced a speedy change and is continuously transforming at a spectacular pace.

There is a wide range of challenges faced by mobile phone web developers. The most important one is the numerous kinds of phones that are available. Every model of a mobile phone is the biggest challenge to the person who develops the web page for mobile phones.

The second and the most important challenge is to understand the difficulty of a user who uses the small screen to navigate the web page and do the web designing extremely user friendly to this user.

There are two types of approaches that can be adopted. First approach is to design pages for the most basic type of mobile phone web design. Another method is to check what kind of a service request is coming in and serve it accordingly at the server level which means that there are multiple designs for a single web page.

Majorly preferred markup language in mobile phone web design is the Wireless Markup Language. Wireless Application Protocol serves as a proxy between the server and the phone. This also alters the web page consequently.

The second method is to make use of the innovative browser settings of the mobile phone and take advantage of the same, thereby sending to the server the various capabilities of the phone. Consequently, the server and its content can be transformed dynamically making the server tailor made to the requested service.

Either way, the reality of mobile phone website design is far more complicated than the normal simple html design and needs a specialized acumen of its own.

Why not try using WordPress? In all probability, you have been exposed to it as a good blogging platform, but there are some incredible things you can use it for. WordPress is a convenient way to build a website or CMS (Content Management System) which is full of advantages. For more about wordpress and other internet marketing tools and information on how to earn money from home visit our blog.

It is very easy when you have fantastico in the domain control panel and then it simply involves a few clicks and your WordPress site is up and ready. Manual set up can be done easily if you do not have fantastico as this takes little time if you just go by what they ask you to do. You could always delegate the installation job to someone in case you feel uneasy with either of the choices. This job does not cost much and does not require great amount of time especially for someone who has the right experience.

Renovating an old website which was created and designed by another person can be a costly as well as frustrating experience since you have to consider designer payment, and wait till they come back and then finish the assignment. Using a system like WordPress is much more user-friendly and easier to learn. You can say good bye to the designer who never seemed to have the time for you as all upgrading of your own website can be done immediately where changes are visible instantly. Visit our wordpress blog for teaching on generating mlm leads.

One of the biggest advantages of WordPress is that all website refurbishing and changes could be conveniently outsourced. Just set up a virtual assistant and allocate a username and password which she uses to log on and work on your site. You do not have to worry if you have the latest version of the site up, or whether you are overwriting the work done by some other person.

You could make smart use of them if you want to organize your content according to categories and the program can do the rest of the work for you.

Search engines love websites that are frequently updated. The blog types and the WordPress would compel you to renovate your site often and this can spell magic to your site rankings. Even the blog search engines find you and this means that your site is immediately hoisted up.

When you use WordPress to build a site, you are automatically entitled to RSS Feed subscription. Your readers are not now able to subscribe to the RSS feed and get information regarding any new content which you might add. This is a very successful way to make your site prosper with increasing number of people coming back for more knowledge and solutions. What should give you just a few ideas on how you can start using WordPress to create a website that draws in more traffic and makes your life easier.

A lot of successful websites depend on returning visitors to account for a major part of their traffic. Returning visitors are easier to convert into paying customers because the more often they return to a site, the more trust they have in that site. The credibility issue just melts away. Hence, keep your visitors coming back to your site with the following methods:

1) Start a forum, chatroom or shoutbox

When you start a forum, chatroom or shoutbox, you are providing your visitors a place to voice their opinions and interact with their peers -- all of them are visitors of your site. As conversations building up, a sense of community will also follow and your visitors will come back to your site almost religiously every day.

2) Start a web log (blog)

Keep an online journal, or more commonly known as a blog, on your site and keep it updated with latest news about yourself. Human beings are curious creatures and they will keep their eyes glued to the monitor if you post fresh news frequently. You will also build up your credibility as you are proving to them that there is also a real life person behind the website.

3) Carry out polls or surveys

Polls and surveys are other forms of interaction that you should definitely consider adding to your site. They provide a quick way for visitors to voice their opinions and to get involved in your website. Be sure to publish polls or surveys that are strongly relevant to the target market of your website to keep them interested to find out about the results.

4) Hold puzzles, quizzes and games

Just imagine how many office workers procrastinate at work every day, and you will be able to gauge how many people will keep visiting your site if you provide a very interesting or addicting way of entertainment. You can also hold competitions to award the high score winner to keep people trying continuously to earn the prize.

5) Update frequently with fresh content

Update your site frequently with fresh content so that every time your visitors come back, they will have something to read on your site. This is the most widely known and most effective method of attracting returning visitors, but this is also the least carried out one because of the laziness of webmasters. No one will want to browse a site that looks the same over ten years, so keep your site updated with fresh bites!

It is fairly easy and even free for a webmaster to use tools to analyse their website traffic, monitor the number of visitors, report of the web pages that have been accessed and the length of time each visitor spends accessing the website.

However, despite the vast amount of detailed information that can be collected what will always be missing is information that will tell the webmaster exactly what the visitor was thinking. Did they dislike the site? Was the layout clear or confusing? Was it easy to navigate the website and were they able to find the information they wanted?

A website may be generating sales but why are there some people that are visiting the website and not buying anything? Was the reason because they didn’t like what was being offered, or was it that they couldn’t find what they wanted even though it was there?

Website surveys provide webmasters with an excellent and accurate method of answering these types of questions. Direct feedback from the website visitors cuts to the chase, no need to guess, just ask the visitors themselves how they found the site and if they found what they were looking for.

With an online survey webmasters can find out:-

How often do people visit the website?

How did they reach the website?

Is their interest in the website for reasons of business or pleasure?

Did they find the information they were looking for?

How easy did they find navigating the website?

Would they recommend the website to others?

A good website survey will be short and to the point and gather good intelligence that once analysed will help improve the website.

An alternative to a more traditional customer survey would be to ask just one or two questions at strategic points. For example, ask visitors at the end of the registration process if they found the procedure quick and easy; or after ordering an item ask if they found the ordering procedure and payment methods straightforward. To ensure that the questions don’t become repetitive to regular visitors the website can be programmed so that the questions are only asked once per registered user.

Website surveys take the mystery out of working out what visitors think of a website and using Online Survey Software they are quick and easy to design and once implemented will really become the webmaster’s assistant.
